TAMIU XC gears up for busy October

Texas A&M International University's men's and women's cross country teams will be idle this weekend before resuming the season on Oct. 3 at the Texas Lutheran Invitational. The season is off to a somewhat staggered start with two events over the first four weeks due to the cancellation of the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 12.

The Dustdevils last competed at the Ricardo Romo UTSA Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic on Sept. 18. Both squads finished in fourth place in the team standings amongst a field of seven teams.

The men notched three top-15 finishes at the UTSA meet with Luís Beltrán finishing 12th, Robert Coronado placing 14th and Antonio González finishing 15th. All three results were personal records for TAMIU's top three.

Marlene Gutiérrez placed fifth and Jenny Méndez in 19th place on the women's side in San Antonio. The 19:18 5K was a career best for Gutiérrez as a college runner and was an improvement of 15 spots from her 20th place finish at the 2008 UTSA Classic.

Head coach Benny Rodríguez believes both teams are in position for a successful remainder of the season.

"The women are holding their ground and finished only a couple of points behind conference foe St. Mary's at UTSA," Rodríguez said.

"On the men's side our top three ran personal records last weekend and I am waiting for our other runners to step up and fill in the gaps for the fourth and fifth positions. It looks promising for both squads and we are doing our best to come out on top."

TAMIU fall sports weekly update

It was quite a week for the Texas A&M International men’s soccer team.

The Dustdevils, after starting the season 0-3-1, posted two key wins over Heartland Conference foes last weekend, topping Newman 4-1 before shutting out Texas Permian-Basin, 2-0.

TAMIU now sits at 2-3-1 heading into a four-game road trip starting with Friday’s non-conference tilt against Midwestern State.

More importantly, the Dustdevils sit atop the Heartland with a 2-0-1 standing, for seven points.

As a result of the dominant play, TAMIU swept this week’s Conference Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore Theo Brown was tabbed as Offensive Player of the Week and senior Luis Rincon was honored as Defensive Player of the Week

Brown recorded three goals and one assist in three games played. He scored two late goals to stretch a 2-1 lead to a 4-1 win over Newman. He was then credited with an assist on the second goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over UT-Permian Basin.

Rincon posted a 2-1 record at goalkeeper, playing all 270 minutes.

He made four saves against Newman, including back-to-back clutch stops on a penalty lick and close-range shot taken on the rebound from that kick in the 50th minute, right after TAMIU had taken a 2-1 lead.

Rincon then posted six saves in a 2-0 win over UT-Permian Basin, marking TAMIU's first shutout since a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 31, 2008.

TAMIU women’s soccer still winless

While their male counterparts picked up their first two wins of the season, the TAMIU women’s soccer team is still in search of its first victory.

TAMIU fell to 0-6-1 on Sunday by falling to Central Oklahoma (5-3-1), 6-0, at the St. Mary’s Classic in San Antonio.

UCO scored three goals in the first 30 minutes and out-shot TAMIU 24-5 en route to the shutout win.

TAMIU will play its next four games at home, starting with a non-conference game against Midwestern State on Friday and the Heartland Conference home opener against Newman on Sunday.

Kickoff against MSU is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Dustdevil Field.

TAMIU volleyball loses two at home

The young and inexperienced TAMIU volleyball team continued its rough start to the season last week.

After losing in a tight, five-set match to Dallas Baptist in their home opener last Thursday, the Dustdevils then were swept by UT-Permian Basin on Saturday.

UTPB (6-11, 1-1 Heartland) finished with 39 kills and 59 digs compared to 30 kills and 44 digs for TAMIU, which now sits at 1-14 overall, 0-2 in Heartland play.

Sophomore Isela Flores, continuing her standout play of late, and Brittany Rendon led TAMIU (1-14, 0-2) with seven kills apiece.

Jennifer Vega led the squad with 14 digs.

TAMIU returns to action with conference road matches at Oklahoma Panhandle State tonight and Newman on Saturday.

TAMIU gets back on the trail

After their second meet of the season was canceled, due to poor weather, the TAMIU cross country teams finally got back on the trail last weekend.

On Friday, TAMIU competed at the Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic at Brooks City-Base.
The Dustdevil women finished fourth in the seven-team field, while the Dustdevil men finished fourth as well.
UTSA’s Dana Mecke won the women's title for the third straight year and sophomore Cole Reveal was the top collegiate male as the UTSA cross country teams swept the team titles.

Georgia College & State University was second in the women’s division with 59 points, followed by St. Mary's (95), TAMIU (107), Texas A&M-Kingsville (110), Lon Morris College (135) and Our Lady of the Lake (139).

Sophomore Marlene Gutierrez finished fifth with a time of 19:18. Teammate Jenny Mendez finished 21st with a time of 22:23.

UTSA scored 19 points for a convincing win in the men’s division, ahead of Texas A&M-Kingsville (83), Georgia College & State University (90), TAMIU (94), Lon Morris College (119), Huston-Tillotson (185) and Schreiner (200).

TAMIU’s Luis Beltran was the top male Dustdevil finisher. He finished in 12th place with a time of 16:20, followed by teammates Robert Coronado Jr. (14th, 16:29) and Antonio Gonzalez (15th, 16:38).

The Dustdevils will next compete at the Texas Lutheran Invitational on Oct. 3 in Seguin.

TAMIU men's basketball announces six newcomers

Texas A&M International University head men's basketball coach Shane Rinner has announced the addition of six recent newcomers to the Dustdevil roster. Four of the newcomers are arriving from the Southern California junior college ranks, one is a transfer from a NCAA Division II program and one is a high school signee from Australia.

Here is a breakdown of the signees:

Bernard Burrell 6'6'' Jr. Compton, Calif. (Oxnard College)

Burrell transfers to TAMIU from Oxnard College. As a sophomore last year he earned first-team All-Western State Conference First honors.

Coach Rinner says: "As an all-conference performer at a high level, Bernard gives us a very talented and experienced player who can play multiple positions. His winning mentality having come for a high school program like Centennial Compton will bring a lot to the group. I really appreciate his junior college coach Jeff Theiler for helping us in the recruiting process, to get Bernard this late is a major win for our program."

Will Faiivae 6'7'' Jr. Oxnard, Calif. (Ventura College)

Faiivae transfers from Ventura Community College where he played in the same conference as Bernard Burrell. Faiivae was a first-team All-Western State Conference honoree.

Coach Rinner says: "Will is a tremendous athlete with a big time motor, he plays very hard. He is a great person and very eager to learn, we need him to be a monster on the interior. His junior college coach Jon Wyers will tell you that Will never takes a play off."

Luís Gómez 6'3'' So. Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield College)

Gómez was a standout guard for Bakersfield College last season.

Coach Rinners says: "Luis comes to us from a program where toughness and hard-work are a premium. Having played for a quality coach like Rich Hughes, Luis will immediately influence the level of competitive greatness within our team. He can distribute the ball, but is also a great shooter with the ability to score."

James Silvie 6'6'' Jr. Long Beach, Calif. (Santa Ana College)

Silvie is a tremendously versatile transfer from Santa Ana College.

Coach Rinner says: "James will be one of the most skilled wings in our conference and our challenge will be to put him in the position on the court where he can help us have the most success. We are extremely excited that he has chosen our program. His versatility in playing many positions will give us a lot of flexibility. He is strong and athletic enough to play in the post but also has great ball skills on the perimeter."

Evan Matteson 6'10'' So. Everett, Wash. (Alaska-Fairbanks)

Matteson is a transfer from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Coach Rinner says: "Matteson has the experience of playing Division II basketball in a very competitive conference and that should make an easier transition into our program. Evan is a late bloomer in basketball terms, his body and strength are just starting to mature. He is a skilled big man who can really shoot the ball. His passion and eagerness to get better should be invaluable as we blend this group together."

Louis Ilton 6'3'' Fr. Darwin, Australia (Anglican Church Grammar School)

Ilton is TAMIU's first addition from Down Under. Australia has been a hot-bed of talent for coach Rinner at his previous stops.

Coach Rinner says: "We are excited Louis chose to come to Laredo, it's a tremendous sacrifice to come so far from home. He is a strong, aggressive player with a great competitive personality. He will bring a high level of toughness. His high school coach Bruce Palmer is a great friend and a coaching legend in Australia."

TAMIU men's soccer players sweep conference honors

After posting a 2-1 week that included two conference wins, Texas A&M International University student-athletes have swept Heartland Conference men's soccer Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 14-20. Sophomore Theo Brown was tabbed as Offensive Player of the Week and senior Luis Rincon Defensive Player of the Week in an announcement made Monday evening by the conference office.

Brown recorded three goals and one assist in three games played. He scored two late goals to stretch a 2-1 lead to a 4-1 win over Newman on Friday. Brown was then credited with an assist on the second goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over UT-Permian Basin. That goal in the 87th minute dashed any hopes of a Falcon comeback in a tightly played contest.

Rincon posted a 2-1 record at goalkeeper, playing all 270 minutes. He made four saves in a 4-1 win over Newman, including back-to-back clutch stops on a penalty lick and close-range shot taken on the rebound from that kick in the 50th minute, right after TAMIU had taken a 2-1 lead. Rincon then posted six saves in a 2-0 win over UT-Permian Basin, marking TAMIU's first shutout since a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 31, 2008.
